The Portrait Sketch in Oils
July 28 - August 1 (M-F) 10am - 5pm
Explore alla prima portrait painting one face at a time over the course of five (5) days with artists and instructors Dale Zinkowski and Barnes Atelier director Travis Seymour.
Capturing a likeness in oil paint is one of the most challenging feats an artist can undertake, being able to do this in 6 hours is not only possible, but incredibly rewarding as well.
Join us this summer for an instructive and motivational week of portrait painting.
Each day there will be (2) instructors— one providing tuition while the other provides demonstration.
-
In this 5-day workshop, artists will paint a different portrait sketch in oil each day. ( New model each day ) Working directly ( wet-in-wet ), the artist will utilise good drawing technique, and careful observation of form and values to complete a lifelike portrait.
Students will discover a clear and straightforward way to approach painting, or drawing the portrait, with an emphasis on accurate drawing and observation, particularly the subtlety that the model presents. Students will also learn how to capture the likeness of the model and simulate the effects of light washing over the forms presented before them. All information covered in this workshop will be thoroughly explained so that each person will meet their individual goals. All levels are welcome.

Dale Zinkowski
Born in New York, Dale’s earliest memories of painting and drawing were from his Grandfather's own work, which hung throughout the home. Fascinated by the world around him, and the ability to capture fleeting moments on paper, he began to draw and paint from nature almost exclusively. From 1993-97, he attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City where he studied the Reilly method with both Marvin Mattelson and John F. Murray. Inspired by the techniques, and hungry for more information, he began copying from the old masters at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
When Murray moved his studio to Tucson, Arizona, Dale followed and focused his studies on the palettes, methods, and materials of artists such as Velazquez and Rembrandt.
In 2012, Dale attended the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, where he pushed his understanding of traditional techniques and materials even further while drawing and painting master copies in museums and painting landscapes in the countryside.
In 2013, Dale returned to New York City, where he completed 4 years of study at Grand Central Atelier under Jacob Collins, Ted Minoff, and Colleen Barry. He lives in the South of France with his wife, contemporary artist Karine Falleni.
Travis Seymour
Travis Seymour (b. 1976) is a British/American artist & art tutor working primarily in oils. His artistic education includes a BA in Fine Art and a BA in Art History from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington(USA).After receiving his degrees in 2001, he began investing more time to drawing from life and to making copies of master paintings from museum collections. In 2002 a move to Florence to study at the prestigious Angel Academy of Art proved life-changing. It was there, in the city of the Renaissance, that Seymour spent the following five years learning and practising the principles of classical drawing and painting, while at the same time meeting his kindred spirit and lifelong partner, English artist Nancy Fletcher.
Travis’ work imbues a sense of precision and clarity; characteristics of classical realist art— but equally, it is born out of sentiment and acknowledgement of raw emotion; a duality which gives his portrait and still life paintings a distinguishable life of their own. His works are classically inspired and styled, but not overworked; dappled with refinement, and yet rendered with a vivacious and romantically modest honesty— all of which are hallmarks of Travis Seymour’s work.
Travis lives in Barnes, southwest London, with his partner Nancy, and their two children. In 2016 they converted their studios into an art school— The Barnes Atelier, where they continue the tradition of teaching classical drawing and painting techniques to aspiring realist artists.
