Atelier Drawing Intensive

July 14 - 25 (M-F) 10am - 5pm

This is an exciting course, held annually each summer and taught by expert artists and instructors Dale Zinkowski and Barnes Atelier director Travis Seymour. Our goal is to help artists discover, practice, and refine aspects of academic drawing which inspire them and help build confidence. It is a great introduction (and refresher) course for artists wanting to immerse themselves in their drawing activity and make strides with their abilities. The course structure is designed to mimic the full-time core atelier drawing programme, with the additional benefit of having (1) instructor teach and (1) instructor demo each and every day.

Students will practice and refine aspects of the following areas:

  • Structural approach to drawing

  • Aspects of light and form

  • Drawing from the life model

  • Drawing from the portrait model

  • Understanding the ‘block-in’ method of drawing

  • Important sub-dermal anatomical landmarks

  • Proper measuring techniques

  • and much much more….

Both instructors will lead you to draw competently, efficiently, and effectivley— allowing confidence to grow for producing more refined artwork.

After completing this course, we recommend joining one of the Painting Masterclasses to further develop your skills with oil paint.

Each day there will be (2) instructors— one providing tuition while the other provides demonstration.

  • Morning session: drawing techniques, block in work, 3D modelling aspects, drawing from the sculpture references.

Afternoon session: long pose figure drawing with the life model.

Evening (4 optional evening sessions): watch / join with instructors drawing the portrait model from life.

Rinse & Repeat for 10 days.

  • Dale Zinkowski
Born in New York, Dale’s earliest memories of painting and drawing were from his Grandfather's own work, which hung throughout the home. Fascinated by the world around him, and the ability to capture fleeting moments on paper, he began to draw and paint from nature almost exclusively.

From 1993-97, he attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City where he studied the Reilly method with both Marvin Mattelson and John F. Murray. Inspired by the techniques, and hungry for more information, he began copying from the old masters at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

When Murray moved his studio to Tucson, Arizona, Dale followed and focused his studies on the palettes, methods, and materials of artists such as Velazquez and Rembrandt.

In 2012, Dale attended the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, where he pushed his understanding of traditional techniques and materials even further while drawing and painting master copies in museums and painting landscapes in the countryside.

In 2013, Dale returned to New York City, where he completed 4 years of study at Grand Central Atelier under Jacob Collins, Ted Minoff, and Colleen Barry. He lives in the South of France with his wife, contemporary artist Karine Falleni.

    Travis Seymour
Travis Seymour (b. 1976) is a British/American artist & art tutor working primarily in oils. His artistic education includes a BA in Fine Art and a BA in Art History from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington(USA).

After receiving his degrees in 2001, he began investing more time to drawing from life and to making copies of master paintings from museum collections. In 2002 a move to Florence to study at the prestigious Angel Academy of Art proved life-changing. It was there, in the city of the Renaissance, that Seymour spent the following five years learning and practising the principles of classical drawing and painting, while at the same time meeting his kindred spirit and lifelong partner, English artist Nancy Fletcher.

Travis’ work imbues a sense of precision and clarity; characteristics of classical realist art— but equally, it is born out of sentiment and acknowledgement of raw emotion; a duality which gives his portrait and still life paintings a distinguishable life of their own. His works are classically inspired and styled, but not overworked; dappled with refinement, and yet rendered with a vivacious and romantically modest honesty— all of which are hallmarks of Travis Seymour’s work.

Travis lives in Barnes, southwest London, with his partner Nancy, and their two children. In 2016 they converted their studios into an art school— The Barnes Atelier, where they continue the tradition of teaching classical drawing and painting techniques to aspiring realist artists.
