By using the limited palette of black, white and umber to create 'neutral' greys (greys that are neither too cool nor too warm), students can fully focus their attention on paint handling while still thinking in black & white - like one does while drawing. This approach is the best way to learn or retrain oneself in the use of oil paint when working from life.

The course follows the same approach as our Head & Shoulders In Oils workshop in that there will be one model for the entire 5 days maintaining the same pose throughout the course. This allows for drawing time before transferring the image to canvas and working with oils.

Students can expect to gain experience with aspects of portrait drawing and painting including proportions of the head, arrangement and accuracy of two-dimensional shapes and features of the face, as well as conceptual and technical insight into paint handling, modelling light over three-dimensional forms, and painting procedures such as underpainting, direct painting and glazes.

Throughout the course students will receive daily individual tuition and demonstrations from the tutor.
